Econ 125: Economic Development, Microfinance and Social Networks

Econ 125 was taught by Arun Chandrasekhar in Spring 2020. The course provides an introduction to the study of the financial lives of households in less developed countries. It focuses on savings, credit and microfinance, informal insurance, social learning (how communities learn about new technologies, products, and job opportunities), corruption, and redistribution. It emphasizes the role that social networks play in each of these study areas. It makes use of economic theory to structure thinking and then turns to empirical analyses that test competing theories.
